New Music: “EP” by Larkin Poe

You may have heard of The Lovell Sisters—the three sisters from Calhoun, Georgia, who won the Prairie Home Companion’s National Teen Talent Competition in 2005 with their blend of mandolin, fiddle, dobro and sweet vocal harmonies.  Well, when the oldest sister, Jessica, got hitched and went off to college this fall, Rebecca and Megan Lovell started a new band—Larkin Poe—with a self-described “edgier folk-rock sound” that still holds onto its Americana/acoustic roots.

This month, the band officially released its first album, simply titled “EP.”  The nine original songs on the record provide the perfect vehicle for the finely blended textures of Rebecca’s strong, authentic voice and mandolin picking (In 2006 she won first place at the MerleFest mandolin pickin’ contest at the age of 15—we're not foolin’ around here…), Megan's beautiful vocal harmonies and easy command of that dobro, and Mike Seal's keyboards and electric guitar.  With the addition of a tight rhythm section (Daniel Kimbro and Chad Melton), the grooves these gals and guys put together will make you think we might have hit spring here in Georgia after all.

I had the good fortune to catch a live performance of the band recently, and it was fabulously energetic and riveting.  In addition to the fact that these gals both write powerful, intelligent songs, their rendition of Jimi Hendrix’s “Bleeding Heart,” with Rebecca pulling off amazing riffs on her mandolin, has totally re-imagined the song for me.  If this isn’t endorsement enough for you, here are two more cool facts: They opted out

of a major label deal they had in place as The Lovell Sisters to remain independent and focus on their own songs, and they named their band after their great-great-great grandfather, Larkin Poe.

Here’s another record you’ve got to have—a collection of some of the greatest Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton songs, all recorded for Peacock Records between 1951 and 1957. If you've never heard her before, you'll never forget her after one listen to her number-one R&B hit, “Hound Dog.” She recorded and made a hit of that song before Elvis took it over, and I personally like her version even more than his (easy now, Elvis fans—give it a listen and then we'll talk…).

Hound Dog - Big Mama Thorton

You can hear Big Mama’s southern roots and a whole lot of life in her voice—it makes you wish you could see her live on stage. Willie Mae was a self-taught singer, harmonica player and drummer, who often changed instruments during performances. Much has been written about Big Mama Thornton, and I don’t feel I can add anything more here, except that she has been an inspiration to many musicians—check out the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls!
